Embracing the Abyss A true story of unknowingly becoming part of a fraud scandal receiving a presidential pardon and being surprised by a spiritual awakening eBook John Smith Reviews
I remember a little about the savings and loan scandals of the 1980s so thought it would be interesting to read a first-hand account by someone involved. I found it fascinating that someone could be prosecuted and convicted when he didn't really know what was going on. Not being an accountant or lawyer, I didn't understand a lot of the things that were done wrong, but it seems any of us can be so caught up the excitement of success that we fail to see it's all smoke and mirrors. This is a reminder that if something seems too good to be true, it probably is.
As a former federal and state white collar crime investigator and C.P.A, seldom have I read a book (from Prologue to Appendix 4) that so captivated my attention and refreshed my faith in the humanity of certain players, as this book did. Mr. Smith’s 27year true-life journey (from job acceptance as a C.P.A. to his arrest, conviction, cooperation, sentencing and final vindication) artfully wove together his actions and reactions to the events and those of a significant cast of characters, including the fraud perpetrators, enablers and prosecutors and defense counsel, all in a manner that makes you wish you knew some of the characters and makes you thankful you avoided others.

Great reading! This is a story from inside the S&L debacle way back in the 80's. Mr Smith writes from a first person perspective on the machinations of industry greed and abuse. Even more interesting is the "human" aspect of how a person can inadvertently get caught up in something larger than oneself and realize too late than one has partnered with evil. Then came the witch hunt (justifiably so with certain individuals). The governments eagerness to punish anyone in the industry regardless of culpability resulted in years of personal turmoil for the author. Spoiler alert is that he eventually came through this absolved of guilt by the powers that be.
This book is essentially two sections. The first is a mostly a historical account of events, and second is redemption written from a philosophical point of view.
Recommended.
A raw view of seemingly impossible events brought to life by startling life events that would not be of anyone's choosing. A story of getting to the other side of bad and the journey. John Smith's travels in the shadows of ethics and a legal system that engulfs the innocent along with the guilty. Lost in the twists and turns of the legal and career nightmare of the savings and loan market manipulations that were not of his making but caught up in the federal prosecution, life becomes a tortured maze of how to cross the Rubicon and get to the other side of the litigation and the realization that being innocent does not define you.
A story of finding the one seer who can bring peace and direction in chaos. Lost in the abyss , the darkness in life is not the defining moment but the catalyst for change. John's encounters with investigators, prosecutors, judges, an insightful attorney and his own defining life experiences and unique character with its stark in your face telling of defining moments from his personal history are all part of the telling of his personal growth against impossible odds. An emotional trip from confidence and success to doubt and discouragement and back again. There are lessons from which anyone can draw. The abyss awaits everyone and it could be a small or a large event. The event either short or long. Perhaps a lifetime. Embracing the Abyss is a learned look back through just one of life's possible portals. A primer in ethics and discernment.
This book is one of the best I have ever read.
Very intersting first hand account of a man wrongly convicted of a crime he knew nothing about. Easy to understand and empathize with brilliant story telling woven in. I was seated next to John on an airplane ride, and I can say I’ve never met a more thoughtful, pleasant, and interesting person!
If you're an accountant or in a financial field you'll probably enjoy this story more. I'm not and there were some professional terms I didn't really understand, but I still enjoyed the overall journey and meaning in this book. This story has stuck with me more than I expected. Especially when he talked about how most people think they already have integrity. I've been questioning myself on that!
